"I have always loved to use fear, to take it and comprehend it and make it work and consolidate a situation where I was afraid and take it whole and work from there...I delight in what I fear." - Shirley Jackson
Shirley Jackson is best remembered for her work as a Gothic American writer. Her best known works are "The Lottery" and The Haunting of Hillhouse. The bulk of Jackson's works was written in the 1940s and 50s. Much of her work was adapted for other media, including TV, movies, and theatre. The unfortunate result of the popularity of her work is that later generations often recognize her work without being aware that Jackson is the author. Jackson was born in San Francisco in 1916 and died in Bennington, Vermont, in 1965 at the age of 45.
